CISC members are working to address the growing demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals and improving the overall cybersecurity posture of organizations and industries. We're consolidating and streamlining cyber workforce development efforts by ensuring a common nomenclature, curriculum development, and recognition of certificates and degrees by hiring employers.
With approval, the CISC utilizes the Idaho National Lab's Cyber Informed Engineering principals as the baseline for the CyberLearn program.
Stony Brook University is a National Center of Academic Execellence in Cyber Security (NCAE-C). This program is managed by NSA's National Cryptologic School. Federal partners include the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)/National Initiative on Cybersecurity Education (NICE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Defense Office of the Chief Information Officer (DoD-CIO), and U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM).
In addition, Stony Brook is home to the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC). The Center's mission focuses on innovative energy research, education and technology deployment with a focus on efficiency, conservation, renewable energy and nanotechnology applications for new and novel sources of energy.
Project CyberLearn is a program under the AERTC, engaging students from diverse fields including applied mathematics, business, computer science, and political science. The initiative leverages learning modules from INL's Cyber Informed Engineering to introduce students to the fundamentals of cybersecurity, equipping them for careers in cyber governance, data analytics, information protection, procurement, and regulatory compliance.
The program benefits from the active participation of energy companies, suppliers, and National Labs, which contribute by offering guest lectures, internships, apprenticeships, co-op opportunities, research projects, and equipment donations. These organizations are also collaborating to create "daisy chain" hands-on learning experiences. Students completing projects with National Labs will seamlessly transition into internships with energy companies, or vice versa, ensuring a well-rounded, practical education.
